Frequently asked questions

Are F grit and micron values one-to-one equivalents?

No. F macrogrit uses a particle-size range, while F microgrit values below are D50 references measured by the sedimentation tube method. A single micron value may relate to several ranges or reference intervals.

Why does F8–F220 show a range?

The owner-confirmed business table defines these F macrogrit entries as particle-size ranges. For example, F60 is 212–300 μm. The tool does not calculate an average or claim that every grain has one fixed diameter.

Why does F230 and finer show D50?

The owner-confirmed table defines F230–F1200 as microgrit D50 values with tolerances measured by the sedimentation tube method. That is a different data meaning and measurement approach from the F8–F220 range.

Why are there two results for a mesh designation?

The mesh D50 reference records separate sedimentation tube and resistance methods. Their values can differ; where one method has no supplied value, the tool shows N/A rather than zero.

Why can micron reverse lookup return several references?

Macrogrit ranges and D50 tolerance intervals can overlap. The tool lists every interval containing the entered value, with sedimentation and resistance mesh matches separated. If a microgrit or P grit has no interval match, it labels a nearest reference rather than an exact conversion.

Technical notes

Read the data meaning first. F8–F220 is a particle-size range. F230–F1200 and P240–P2500 are D50 references under the stated methods. Mesh D50 has two separate methods. A result here is a reference for selection and purchasing, never a one-to-one conversion.

Different grit systems, measurement methods and particle-size definitions are not directly equivalent. Final technical requirements should follow the applicable product specification, test report and agreement between supplier and buyer.

For a purchase inquiry, provide the intended application, grade designation, required distribution or D50 method, batch report requirement and a working sample where available. The grit-size selection guide and F grit product family provide application context.
